Measure before you order

A clear guide to measuring your closet opening.

You don’t need construction experience. Set aside about ten minutes and gather a tape measure, a level, a pencil, and paper. Measure the finished closet opening, not the old doors, and write down every measurement in inches.

Step-by-step guide

Take six measurements and keep the two smallest.

Measure the width in three places and the height in three places. Closet openings are not always perfectly square, so use the smallest width and the smallest height.

Step 1: Get ready

Clear the area around the opening.

Move clothing and other items away from the closet. Measure from one finished surface to the other, including any flooring and trim that will remain after installation.

  • Measure the opening, not the existing door panels
  • Keep the tape straight and level
  • Use inches and write down exact fractions
Step 2: Measure the width

Measure across the opening in three places.

Hook the tape on the inside left edge and pull it straight to the inside right edge. Measure near the top, halfway down, and near the floor.

  • BottomInside left edge to inside right edge

Circle the smallest of the three width measurements.

Step 3: Measure the height

Measure the height in three places.

Place the tape on the finished floor, not on a rug, and measure straight up to the underside of the top opening. Repeat this on the left side, in the center, and on the right side.

Circle the smallest of the three height measurements.

Step 4: Check the opening

Look for anything that may affect the fit.

Place a level against both side jambs, the top, and the floor. Then measure both diagonals from corner to corner. Small differences are common. If the measurements are far apart, ask us to review the opening before you order.

  • Note baseboards or trim that project into the opening
  • Note outlets, switches, vents, or floor transitions nearby
  • Photograph uneven flooring, bowed walls, or damaged edges

Do not round up. Keep the exact fraction shown on the tape.

Step 5: Find your order size

Use the smallest width and height.

“My opening is ___ inches wide by ___ inches high.”

Enter the smallest width first, then the smallest height. Keep all six original readings and your photos until the fit has been confirmed.
